A day in the life of an Elebaires student

To give you a little taste of what it’s like to walk through the wise walls of Elebaires, I will take you through a week of a student.

Day 1 MONDAY: Kind of shy. A little nervous. You will walk through are doors most likely exhausted from your travels and maybe a little bit resentful towards us for making you arrive to the school at 8am for the orientation (this is the only day we are so cruel). That resentment will quickly escape once your eyes meet the coffee and breakfast pastries that await your arrival. So yes, at 8am you will have an orientation, in which you will meet the staff and new students, take a small oral exam with our class coordinator, and will receive tips/information about the school and navigating Buenos Aires. After you will be placed in a class according to your level in which you will receive a folder of materials for the week.

At 10:45 there is a 15 minute break so that your brain doesn’t explode and you can come enjoy the Argentina weather outside in our beautiful garden.

At 1 when classes end there will be many people around to answer immediate and important questions like; where to eat lunch, how to get money, where to buy a sube card etc.

You then have 1 free hour to eat lunch and socialize until 2 rolls around and you find yourself back at the school to meet for our afternoon activity (completely voluntary)! On Mondays we visit a place in the city with a teacher from the school so you can start to get to know the city while also practicing Spanish!

When this is finished you will most likely only have the energy to go home, maybe grab a beer (always energy for that), and ponder how you will make it to the school at 9am the following day.

Day 2 TUESDAY- today you when you arrive to the school at 9 you will go straight to the class until the 15 minute brain break. After the break you will be taken out of class for a short interview with the student advisor (only on your first week) to see how you are doing in the class, in the school, and in the country (if you haven’t noticed yet we like to get personal with our students….). With her you are encouraged to discuss your hopes and dreams for your class and also in your life because she likes to chat. Then you will return to class and continue business as usual.

After classes today again you have an hour for lunch in which you will most likely need a recommendation and in which most likely you will be presented with a conveniently hand crafted map with marked lunch places.

After lunch you will return for the activity of the day which will be in the school; likely a yoga class in our garden (weather dependant) or a mini movie theater. This will complete your second day in the lovely Elebaires.

Day 3 WEDNESDAY- Once again. 9am arrival and busy learning until the break in which usually on Wednesday´s we have a mini mate class to share how to prepare and drink mate in the correct and approved way (trust me there are many unexpected details)

After class and the very-necessary lunch break, we will do another outing into the city to practice Spanish and see something new!

Day 4 THURSDAY- today you will probably arrive mentally tired but with the bright light of the weekend starting to shine. SO, 9am at the wonderful gate of our institution, like every other day, you will be greeted by someone to let you in and you will walk your eager self to class as per usual.

During the break (and if its your last week at the school), you will be asked to leave your mark here on the walls of Elebaires (…but literally). You will travel back in time to the years of primary school and paint your hand to make a handprint so your memory stays once you have left.

After class and much needed lunch break you will come back to the school for conversation club, in which you will laugh, chat, and most likely get way too competitive in the game being played that week.

Today your journey home will be accompanied with the excitement and relief that the next day is Friday.

Day 5 FRIDAY- the absolute best day at Elebaires. The day of celebration. Of rejoice. Of relief that you can sleep until the sun sets the next day.

Today at some point during your class, if it is your last week, you will be taken out yet again to talk with the student advisor to do some deep reflecting on your experiences. We love feedback so she will ask you to share all of your thoughts yet again about your experience and what we can do better. You will also be celebrated with a certificate in the tail end of your class so you can receive a well-earned applause from your classmates.

On this day we have the infamous picada, which is a lunch that we share that includes food, drinks, and most importantly, great company. On this morning you will chip in some money to make the necessary purchases to feed the masses come the end of class. From the end of class until the end of time (aka until whenever you want to leave) we will eat, drink, and enjoy each others company and then most likely leave with the other students who want to get a post-picada beer.

If today is your last day of at the school, you are forbidden to leave before you give a hug to every staff member of the school and promise to keep in touch!
