Café Tortoni

One of Elebaires´s main aims is to offer its students a chance to experience Argentinean culture. There is often no better way to do this than to soak up the atmosphere in a bustling Buenos Aires café. So, on Monday afternoon, after an enriching morning of lessons, a group of Elebaires students headed down to Café Tortini with Martin, our teacher-turned-tour-guide.

If you happen to find yourself in the sophisticated surroundings of Café Tortoni in the San Telmo area, you might be forgiven for thinking you have stepped back in time to the 19^th century, where artists, poets, painters and writers shared ideas over a cortado (an espresso with a shot of warm, frothy milk) or played billiards and cards. Café Tortini borrows its name from its Parisian counterpart, after a French immigrant named Touan opened the café in 1858. It quickly became a hub of Argentinian culture and even today it is a fantastic place to people-watch whilst soaking in the palatial setting. What´s more, every Saturday evening, there is a fabulous Tango show to put you in the mood for some dancing!
