Wanting to broaden your second language vocabulary? read the following 5 tips to help you do so!
- Keep a notebook
We all know that when we look up certain words it stays in our brain for approximately 30 seconds and then its gone forever. To combat this issue, buy a mini notebook that you can carry with you to write down the words that you learn or are curious about! Then read the new ones every night to keep them fresh in your mind until they are permanent information.
2. Read in the target language
book are always a great way to broaden your vocabulary and most likely the type of language will be consistent throughout a book and so there will be enough repetition for you to be able to engrain those words into your vocabular!
3. Keep curious! look things up in the moment!
maybe you are in a normal life situation and you express something or make a remark, always think…how would i say that in Spanish? (or other target language). then you can look it up in that moment and add it to your little vocabulary booklet. However, do not depend solely on google translate for complicated sentences or expressions because you could end up saying something that you really do not want to.
4. Use flashcard apps-
there are so many online resources these days to help you study using flashcards, quizzes, courses etc. so use them! make flashcards and study them every day for 10 minutes and it will help you a lot.
5. Put the words to use
Your brain will not retain the words if it does not find a use for them so give the new words context. Use them in sentences and if you can, find a way to actually speak them! Whether that means talking to yourself in the mirror, taking classes. or coming to our free virtual conversation club every Thursday (contact us for more information), integration is essential!
