Language is made up of words and vocabulary so in the process in learning a new language, vocabulary acquisition is essential. Learning a new language is exciting, challenging, and at some times overwhelming with the infinite amount of words to learn. So take a look at a couple tips to learn new vocabulary in fun and enjoyable way!
- Read, read, read!
Pick a book that you will enjoy (maybe one of your favorites that you have already read in your own language) and read it in the language you want to learn! It s a good idea to purchase the book so you are at liberty to write in the margins or underline!
- Give context to the words
Trying to learn new words by translation memorization might be futile. There is an exponentially higher likelihood that you will remember he word if you give it context. So, create sentences or stories using the new words you鈥檝e learned to approach your vocabulary learning by themes or topics.
- Watch and learn
Watch Netflix shows or movies in the language you want to learn! You can always put subtitles and write down new words that you come across
- Listen to music- discover its meaning
Yes I know that often times hearing the lyrics in your mother tongue is even difficult but if聽 you listen to music in your target language and look up the lyrics to that song, you now have the context of the song and the feeling or beat of that song to help you remember the meaning of the words!
- Buy a vocab notebook
Document the new words you learn! Write them down! Again, not just with direct translation but maybe with context or a sentence!
