Before coming to Argentina, if someone asked me about Latin American food, I would’ve thought of Mexican Burritos, Tacos and Argentinean steaks. Never before had I heard about Peruvian food so I was excited to try it for the first time here in Buenos Aires. I was instantly surprised when I opened the menu and the entire first page consisted of sushi dishes. Besides that, there was another section of ‘Asian fusion cuisine’. Slightly confused, I asked the waitress whether this was typical for Peruvian restaurants and she told me that Peruvian cuisine, as well as modern Peruvian culture in general, is strongly influenced by Chinese and Japanese immigrants. Following the recommendation of the waitress, I ordered sushi as a starter and a more traditional ‘Chaufa con Pollo’ (a dish of fried rice with vegetables and chicken). The sushi tasted like authentic Japanese sushi and the Chaufa was one of the best dishes I’ve had here in Buenos Aires. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who would like to experience other South American cuisines at reasonable prices, especially if you like slightly exotic food.
