3 Must and Must Not’s of Buenos Aires

MUSTS!
1. You MUST visit La Boca.

La Boca is one of the most colourful and vibrant areas of the capital. It has a tourist hub where there are tango shows on the street, multicoloured buildings creating beautiful backgrounds for photos and authentic little street markets with great gifts and souveniers for your trips. Alongside this, La Boca also offers a more “real-life” side to the BA life with incredible street art decorating the walls which all have an interesting story to tell. The artists use their artistic expression to spread their beliefs and thoughts about topics such as politics, love, etc.

2. You MUST eat lots of steak and drink lots of wine!

You have an excuse to eat and drink until your heart’s content. Mendoza is the well-known area in Argentina for its amazing red wine so make sure to try some of that whilst you are here. Also, Argentines are known for their amazing “asados” (this is the Spanish word for BBQs). If you are wandering around the city you won’t miss the hundreds of restaurants advertising a “parrilla” in their window which tells you that they sell steaks.

3. You MUST practice your Spanish!!

Buenos Aires is full of friendly people who are keen to speak in their native language and interested in your reasons for studying Spanish and for being in Buenos Aires. So it presents a great opportunity to get practicing outside of the classroom and wherever you go to explore the city. Practice makes perfect!!

MUST NOTS!
1. You MUST NOT forget to be safe.

Buenos Aires is an amazing place, but like all big cities you need to be careful and be aware. For example, when you go on the buses or the Subway you should keep a close eye on your bag and try not to show your SmartPhone when you are walking through the streets. Small precautionary actions will make sure you have a safe and enjoyable time in Buenos Aires.

2. You MUST NOT miss out on the vibrant nightlife throughout the city.

If you head to the trendy neighbourhood of the city, Palermo, there are lots of cool bars dotted around. If you look close enough there are also Secret Bars. One is called Franks (Arevalo 1445). You enter through a telephone after giving the password (which you can get from their Facebook page)and it has a stylist Great Gatsby theme inside with lots delicious cocktails to choose from.

3. You MUST NOT exchange currency at the airport booths.

There are two different rates; the official rate and the blue market rate. If you exchange in the airport or if you take money out of the ATM you get charged at the official rate. If you bring US dollars, Euros or Sterling you are able to get a much better exchange rate from cuevas (shops where you are able to change money) but you much do so with caution.
