Trip to Tigre

Taking advantage of the 4-day weekend a group from Elebaires fled the city and headed to Tigre for the day. A small town 50 minutes from the city centre of Buenos Aires, Tigre is a breath of fresh air from the fast-paced and crowded city. With the lovely Angela as our local tour guide, we strolled alongside the river and watched speed boats and row boats cruise the many islands that surround Tigre. The picturesque town is a popular wedding spot with its lush green grass, old canopying trees and river. The houses too are colourful and of unique design to cope with the once ever-flooding river. Angela reminisces when she was a school girl having to be rowed home in small paddling boats along the streets. To this day the school has these contingent floating-school-buses on the grounds just in case.

We visited the beautiful Museo de Arte which was once an extravagant hotel later gifted to the town and has since become an historic landmark. It is impossible not to marvel at its exterior. It’s long elegant veranda stretches to the riverfront and is supported by tall classical columns. Afterwards we stopped at Tim and feasted on well-deserved milanesas and pizza. The afternoon was for shopping as we explored the giant Puertos de Frutos market. Clothes, jewellery, furniture, mate and much more could be taken home as souvenir of the sweet pretty town of Tigre.

How to get to Tigre:

• Take the sube or a collectivo to Retiro station
• Ask at information if the train leaves to Tigre directly or you may need to take a free shuttle to another nearby station
• Use your subte card to ‘tap on and off’ at either end, 7 peso only!
• Tigre is the final stop, roughly 50 minutes.
