Internship in Argentina
Working in the land of beautiful nature, delicious food and the tango is the goal of many students. Especially of the students who aim to do their internship in Argentina. Even though social media is incredibly popular in Argentina, it can feel hard to reach comapnies in Argentina. Not because they do not have a website or social media, but simply because it is hard to estimate from a far distance what a company looks like in real life. In this blog, we give insights on what you can expect from doing an internship in the capital of Argentina.
The search for an Internship in Argentina
To search for a company where you would like to do your internship, it is key that you first map out what kind of company would suit your and your school’s goals. Whenever you have a clear idea of what kind of internship you would like, it becomes easier to find a company. The search for a company is mostly done online and by emailing the found companies. Sometimes, an agency is used to arrange the contact. Using an agency can be beneficial, because they are able to provide certainty and most of the time guarantee you an internship in return for their fee.
The company culture
The company culture in Argentina, in which you as intern-to-be hope to work in, can be a bit different than most people from the United States or Europe. Most companies start between nine and ten in the morning and work until five of six in the afternoon. Unlike most people think, companies in the city of Buenos Aires are not having a siesta in the afternoon; in the big city, people like to have a longer break at midday, but they are not likely to sleep. The culture at a company differs per industry. It is fair to say that there is a relatively big hierarchy. In addition to that, due to the fact that Argentinians are not used to plan far ahead, it can come across a bit chaotic once in a while.
Traveling to your internship is very easy in Buenos Aires. The city has a good metro-network, busses take you everywhere and if you would prefer to travel alone, then there are plenty of taxis to bring you to your destiny for a fair price. The best advise is to search for an accommodation near your internship. Living close enables you to walk to your work and discover the neighborhood you live in.
Discover the country
Doing an internship at companies in Argentina most of the time means that your employer is very flexible. The company understands that you want to discover other parts of Argentina as well. That is why, if you work hard and productive, you are likely to get some time off to travel for a bit. However, you should not expect that you can travel whenever you want and for as long as you want! In order to be productive from the start, being able to speak the basis of Spanish will really help! Improve your Spanish at Elebaires!
