Public Transportation in Buenos Aires

When in Buenos Aires, you MUST take advantage of its superior public transportation system. It is super cheap, efficient and relatively quick. There are many commuting options to choose from when deciding which public transportation to take and you will never be stranded with no way back home. However, you first must buy a SUBE card before taking public transportation. This is a one time payment of about 20 pesos and you can buy it at many kioscos around the city. This little blue card is your ticket to getting around in Buenos Aires.

1. Subte

Composed of five lines that connect the city, the Subte is the Subway system in Buenos Aires. This is the fastest and easiest option, however it often gets very, very crowded, especially during the peak hours of 8 – 9am and 6 – 8pm. You will see Subte stations scattered all around the city and the cost is around 7 pesos per ride. Just scan your Subte card at the entrance and you are ready to go.

2. Coletivo, Bondi, or Bus

No matter how you say it, I am sure you are familiar with this method of transportation. The Coletivos run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with over 180 numbered lines. You are never too far from a bus stop. When you get on the bus, you tell the bus driver where you are going and then depending on how far it is they will charge you between 6 and 6.50 pesos per ride. You then scan your SUBE card and find a place to sit or stand depending on how busy the bus is.

3. Trens

For longer commutes, trains may be your best option. There are several train stations around the city and only cost about 7 pesos per trip. If you are wanting to spend the day in Tigre, the train is a super cheap way to get there is it only takes 50 mins. You just scan your card, grab a pancho, and wait for the next train to arrive. 

4. Cycling

Bike stations are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are completely free. There are 90 stations located throughout the city and even more are being installed. 5. Taxis

Of Course, there are Taxis everywhere and you can flag one down in seconds. You will be able to tell if a taxi is available by a red lit up sign on its front passenger side windshield. If this sign says LIBRE, then that means no one is in the taxi and you may flag it down. However, if there is no red light on the window, then that means someone is already using it. Just get in, tell the driver where you are going and then pay in pesos once you get there.

So there you have the many options of getting around in Buenos Aires, but you still may need a little help knowing exactly where you are going. There are many Apps that you can download on your phone that do not use wifi and show you which colectivo or subte to take and your exact route.
