Surviving Winter in Buenos Aires

The hot and humid days of summer are long gone and winter is here in full force. Out are the short shorts and platform flip flops and in are the fuzzy scarves and trenchcoats. As July is approaching, the weather in Buenos Aires is becoming colder and colder. If you are planning a trip here, be prepared to be bundled.

Coming from a state where it snows all winter long, the mild winter temperatures in Buenos Aires didnt seem so bad. However, the wind chill and humidity add an extra chill factor and I ended up giving in and buying extra jackets.

You may be reluctent to buy winter clothes in Buenos Aires due to the high price, but there are places where you can snag a great deal on staying warm.

1. San Telmo Market: Every Sunday from 10am-4pm, hundreds of vendors spread across Calle Defensa for the weekly San Telmo Feria. You are sure to find many treasures in this traditional market. You will be able to get winter clothes here for much cheaper than in shops or malls. So head to San Telmo this weekend and stock up on some scarfs, mittens, and jackets!

2. Vintage Stores: Being the fashionable city that it is, Buenos Aires has many vintage shops where you can also find something unique and unexpected. There are many vintage shops all over the city and you are certain to find a great deal on some lightly used clothing. Some of the most popular are Juan Perez, Portobello Boutique, Retro Vintage, and El Buen Orden.

So after you have all your winter gear, you can head to one of the many cafes, musems, theatres, or bookstores in Buenos Aires. There are many cultural activities that you can do on a cold day.

1.Cafe Tortoni : One of the oldest and most historic cafes in Buenos Aires. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while learning some of this citys rich history.

2. Teatre Colon : A cold day is the perfect excuse to go watch a show at this famous theatre. You can also go on tours in english or spanish.

3. El Ateno: This is one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Enjoy a day reading through books while you admire the old theatre that it was built in.
